Black Mantou Cheese Burger
Mantou is a type of steamed bread becoming increasingly popular in the NZ foodie scene. Originally a Northern Chinese bread made from wheat flour, water and raising agent. It is soft, fluffy and usually white. Black beans are added to make it black!
In this recipe, a sizzled gourmet beef burger with burger sauce is layered in a black Mantou bun with melting cheese, crisp lettuce, onions and tangy pickles. And yes, it tastes as magical as it looks!
Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes
4 ready made Black Mantou Buns
4 Angus Beef Burgers
Natural Avocado Cooking Oil
4 slices of swiss cheese
1 cup FRESH GROWER SWEET PETITE COS shredded lettuce
½ small red onion, sliced thinly
2 medium sized tomatoes, sliced
4 pickles, sliced
3 tbsp Tomato sauce
2 tbsp Mayonnaise
White sesame seeds, toasted to garnish
In a non stick frypan or barbeque, cook the burgers with a drizzle of natural avocado oil - melt the cheese on top with a lid on for a couple of minutes.. Set aside and keep warm. (Tip - You may need to half and reshape the burgers and cheese to fit the mantou buns before cooking).
Slice the black mantou buns in two and heat in microwave for 40 secs.
Mix tomato sauce and mayonnaise in a small bowl.
To build the burgers, first place the bottom piece of the mantou on a heatproof tray. Spread a good amount of tom/mayo sauce. Top with a burger, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and more sauce. Put the other half of the bun on top to complete the burger. Sprinkle with white sesame seeds and serve immediately with a lovely glass of Ara Pinot Noir.
