Allan Fong was the 2016 supreme award winner at the Australasian Syngenta Growth Awards, which recognise excellence and best practice in productivity, sustainability and contribution to the community and people.  The Fresh Grower also has been published in numerous articles and magazines including a feature piece in Nadia Lim's magazine.


To Pukekohe market gardener, Allan Fong, fresh thinking is a way of life. Then again, as his business (run with his brother, Colin, and wife Loretta), The Fresh Grower, was established by his grandfather and father, it’s literally been part of the local landscape for decades. This month, we chat with Allan about what it takes to enjoy the sweet taste of success.


People can be scared of cooking with Asian greens, says Allan, and getting them to experiment with some of his “less conventional” produce – such as kale – can be a challenge. But with the trend towards fresh rather than processed foods still burgeoning, Kiwis are getting more creative in the kitchen. “You’ve got to marry it up with a really good recipe,” he says.



“As food producers, we’ve got to put our hands up to find solutions that will help feed the world’s ever-increasing population on ever decreasing productive land availability,” he says. “We have to do what’s best by the environment, our practices and our people,” he says.


This group of seven represent the very best of Australian and New Zealand growers and advisers. They were recognised for their outstanding contributions to the industry across three award categories: Productivity; Sustainability; and Community and People.

“They have made great achievements across the board, from developing farming apps to implementing successful extension work and championing other growers across their communities.”
